Choosing the Right Approach
Counselling can be particularly helpful when you are dealing with a specific situation, such as relationship difficulties, bereavement, stress, a major life change or a challenging period at work.
Psychotherapy may explore experiences and patterns in greater depth, particularly when difficulties have persisted for a long time or appear to have connections with earlier experiences, relationships or established ways of thinking and behaving.
However, the distinction is not always clear-cut. Counselling can involve deep and meaningful exploration, while psychotherapy can also address immediate problems.
What matters most is finding an approach and therapeutic relationship that are appropriate for you.
You do not need to decide whether you need counselling or psychotherapy before seeking support. Discussing what has brought you to therapy, what you are experiencing and what you hope to achieve can help determine how best to work together.
