Creating a Safe and Confidential Space
Trust is fundamental to the therapeutic relationship. Knowing that you have a private space in which to talk can make it easier to explore difficult experiences honestly and without fear of judgement.
However, confidentiality is not always absolute. There are limited circumstances in which a therapist may have an ethical or legal responsibility to share information, particularly where there is a serious concern about someone’s safety or where disclosure is required by law.
The boundaries and limits of confidentiality should be explained clearly when you begin therapy, giving you the opportunity to ask questions and understand how your information is handled.
