How Long Does Therapy Take?
The length of therapy can depend on why you are seeking support, what you would like to achieve and how your needs develop during the therapeutic process.
A recent difficulty or clearly defined problem may sometimes be suitable for shorter-term work. More complex experiences, longstanding emotional difficulties, addiction, relationship patterns or issues connected to the past may benefit from a longer period of exploration.
You do not necessarily need to decide how many sessions you will have before starting.
Therapy can be reviewed as it progresses. You and your therapist can consider what has changed, whether the sessions remain helpful and whether there are areas you would still like to explore.
The aim is not to keep someone in therapy for a predetermined length of time, but to provide meaningful support for as long as it remains appropriate and beneficial.
