Question

How Do I Know If I Need Therapy?

You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. If thoughts, emotions, behaviours or experiences are affecting your wellbeing, relationships or everyday life, talking to a therapist can provide an opportunity to understand what is happening and consider what you would like to change.

When Might Therapy Help?

People seek therapy for many different reasons. Sometimes there is an obvious event, such as a relationship breakdown, bereavement, addiction, work difficulties or a major change in life.
At other times, it can be harder to identify exactly what is wrong.

You may feel anxious, low, overwhelmed, angry or emotionally exhausted. Perhaps the same relationship difficulties keep occurring, your confidence has changed, you are relying on unhealthy ways of coping or you simply no longer feel like yourself.

You might also be functioning perfectly well outwardly while recognising that something underneath does not feel right.

Therapy gives you somewhere to explore these feelings without needing to justify why they are important enough to discuss. You do not need a diagnosis and you do not need to wait until a problem becomes severe.

It can also be valuable when there is no particular crisis. Some people use therapy to understand themselves better, explore past experiences, improve relationships or recognise patterns they would like to change.

You don’t need to be in crisis or know exactly what you need. If something is affecting how you feel or live your life, an initial conversation can help you decide whether therapy is right for you
